Why Putting Your Phone in Rice is a Myth

It’s the most ubiquitous piece of tech advice on the internet: if you drop your phone in the toilet, pool, or puddle, immediately submerge it in a bowl of uncooked rice. But as professional repair technicians, we have to tell you the harsh truth: putting your phone in rice is a myth, and it can actually do more harm than good.

The Science Behind the Myth

The logic behind the rice trick seems sound at first glance. Rice absorbs water, right? Yes, but not efficiently enough to save a complex piece of electronics.

When your phone takes a plunge, water seeps into the microscopic gaps between components on the logic board. The real enemy isn't just the water itself, but the minerals and impurities suspended in it. When the water evaporates, it leaves these conductive minerals behind. This leads to two major problems:

  1. Short Circuits: The minerals bridge connections that shouldn't be connected, causing short circuits that can instantly fry delicate ICs (Integrated Circuits) when power is applied.
  2. Corrosion: Over time, these minerals react with the metal components, leading to rust and corrosion, permanently eating away at the board.

Rice acts far too slowly to stop this process. By the time the rice might have passively drawn out some moisture, the damage is already done.

Why Rice Makes It Worse

Not only does rice fail to prevent corrosion, it introduces new problems:

  • Starch Dust: Uncooked rice is coated in fine starch dust. When you bury a wet phone in rice, this dust gets inside the charging port, headphone jack, and speaker grilles. When mixed with the existing water, it forms a sticky paste that hardens like concrete, ruining those components.
  • False Sense of Security: The worst part of the rice myth is that it gives people a false sense of hope. You leave the phone in rice for two days, take it out, and sometimes it actually turns on! You think the rice worked. However, it often turns on despite the rice, not because of it. And unfortunately, the corrosion process is likely still ongoing inside. Weeks or months later, the phone will inevitably fail mysteriously, often permanently.

What Actually Works

So, if not rice, then what?

  1. Silica Gel Packets: Those little "Do Not Eat" packets you find in new shoes or beef jerky are powerful desiccants designed for electronics. They absorb moisture far faster and more effectively than rice without the dust.
  2. 99% Isopropyl Alcohol: If you are technically inclined and can open the device immediately, displacing the water with 99% isopropyl alcohol can prevent mineral deposits from forming. (Do not try this unless you know what you are doing).
  3. Professional Ultrasonic Cleaning: This is the only guaranteed way to halt liquid damage. At TSC, our first step with a wet phone is full disassembly. We then place the logic board in an industrial ultrasonic cleaner filled with specialized chemical solutions. The ultrasonic waves create microscopic cavitation bubbles that scrub away all mineral deposits and corrosion at a microscopic level.

When to Seek Professional Help

If your device has been submerged, time is critical. Don't wait 48 hours for a bowl of rice to fail. The sooner a professional can disconnect the battery and clean the logic board, the higher the chances of a full recovery. If you've suffered a liquid spill, turn the device off immediately and bring it to Tech Service Centre in Hounslow. We have the specialized equipment to save your device properly.
